[1]槍(gun)為槍獵犬(gun-dog)的簡縮。擔負重活(loaded)有悲慘生活的含意。
[2]「角落」指不受重視，沒有發揮槍獵犬的本領。
[3]「主人」剛剛退休，因此才有時間在山林間遊蕩，第21行敘述他的生命將盡。主人認出槍獵犬的潛能。

[9-12]「光明閃亮」為獵槍射擊的火光。位於義大利的維蘇威火山在西元79年時摧毀了龐貝，維蘇威也有火柴的用法，出現於十九世紀中期。「維蘇威的臉」指擊發的火光，照亮主人臉上打獵射擊時的表情。主人以槍擊來舒發如同維蘇威火山的爆發。
[13-16]槍或獵犬都可以保護主人，但睡眠時堅硬的獵槍不會好於軟如綿鳧絨毛枕頭的獵犬身體，這屬於謎語的提示之一。
[17]「他的敵人」指獵物，也是敵犬的敵人。敵人(foe)也有障礙的解釋。
